Now there is no hard-and-fast rule as far as I know, but virtually all Brit inf bdes and divs with identifiable continuing histories WW I /WWII have been merged (I did a wave of this when I first started in 2006). I am going to add a summary of your data to 38 (Irish) Inf Bde, and respectfully ask you to consider merging 38 Inf Bde's history into one article. This is exactly in line with my own thinking - I'll do so as soon as I can. I would also like to start a debate about whether the London Regiment page should be divided into two: London Regiment [the present day unit] and London Regiment 1908–1937, which was a completely different organisation. It effectively disappeared in 1916 and the individual battalions were treated as ' XX London Regiment' in their own right, affiliated to different regular Army regiments. Doubled categories

Thanks for all your continuing hard work on the various RA regiments, especially AA. You're doing a fantastic job. However there's one minor course correction I'd like to pass on. At the moment you have listed some regiments in the lowest category - say Cat:Light AA Regts - and the next category higher up, usually Category:Air defence units and formations of the British Army. Articles should not be listed in two levels of the hierarchy at once, because that just clutters the higher category, and the lowest categories are usually specifically created to declutter the higher categories. You'll see the edit I've just made at [1] which reverses your mistaken addition of yesterday. Again, you're doing a fantastic job, I wish we had more like you, and this is just a minor word in your ear. Agreed: battalions are subunits of regiments (though often they are one and the same) so McCrae's Battalion should be in the 'military units and formations' category rather than 'regiments of Scotland' sense stricto, though non-specialists will not appreciate the subtle distinction. I was merely cleaning up categories, and marking the change as minor was a slip on my part. Non-specialists will certainly not appreciate the distinction between a battalion and a regiment if the former is mis-categorised as the latter when they come to this work of reference. Well, I looked all around your pages looking for 1 Middlesex Eng Vols, and had no success. Would you be able to just insert the correct name of the 1860 predecessor unit and a ref in that page? That would be great if you could. For your slightly non-standard page, you could always move it to a different name. I'd also advise you to read carefully WP:MILMOS#UNITNAME, because as much as I admire your great effort using the first titles of all these units, our guidelines say we should use the most recent title!! Yes, I noticed when I did the redirects for the minor RVCs incorporated into the North Midland Divisional Engineers that a previous batch of Staffordshire RVC redirects had the short titles. I've provided parallel redirects with the full title and the categories, so that the 'Military units and formations in Staffordshire' category will now be consistent. I've had a look. It doesn't look too bad, but I have some other source material so I could do a light clean up, such as clarifying the relationships with the Kings Regiment and the 1st Air Landing Battery, and I can add properly sourced references, including the regimental history. Thanks Rickfive. If 1947 was the magic year when all the RA regiments were renumbered into a single series, two lists, one pre-1947 and one post-1947, sound best. What exact title should the pre-1947 list be at? This is because it should cover all brigades and regiments up to that point. If that's still too big a list we could do a World War I list as well. WP:MILMOS#UNITNAME

Having just seen you created 54th_Anti-Aircraft_Brigade I need to check whether you are aware of this guideline. Effectively units/formations need to be at their last designation. The page 54 AA Brigade would have (1st Formation)- a whole history of the first 54 AA Bde, and a disbandment/redesignation link to the new unit name, and then (2nd Formation) - history of second brigade. I hesitate to disrupt your fine work like this, but unless you wish to request an exemption from our rules, the pages will need to be reorganised under the last unit designation. Post Office Rifles

I have just added the note (Post Office Rifles) to the 8th (Service) Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) in the World War I section. But is this battalion part of the London Regiment? Was this correct? What's the difference between the Royal Fusiliers and the London Regiment in the First - Second World War period?

The 8th (City of London) Bn London Regiment (Post Office Rifles) and 8th (Service) Bn Royal Fusiliers are different units. The London Regiment battalions still need a lot of work, but the main London Regiment page is pretty accurate now. In summary, the London Regiment formed in 1908 consisted of 28 Territorial battalions, the first eight of which were 'City of London' and the remainder 'County of London'. Of these, the 1st-4th (City of London) Bns were *affiliated* to the Royal Fusiliers (City of London) Regiment, but not part of its numbered sequence of battalions. The Service Bns of WWI were Kitchener Army , not Territorial units. Post WWI the London Rgt disappeared and the bns reverted to their pre-1908 affiliations. Before and during WWII some were renumbered with this regiment, some were listed separately. Just to make things worse, the 8th Londons merged with the 7th Londons in 1920 and the Post Office Rifles title was moved across to the 7th!Rickfive (talk) 10:00, 17 June 2017 (UTC)

Ah-ha, I should have remembered; Service battalions were war-formed units. My source was a recruiting postcard, labelled '8th Battalion, City of London Regiment' Post Office Rifles. 1st Cinque Ports Artillery Volunteers

Being interested in unit lineages, I was pleasantly surprised to find a growing list of British Artillery Volunteers on Wikipedia.

From Westlake's "Tracing the Rifle Volunteers", I created charts: https://hcvv.home.xs4all.nl/milweb/Great-Britain/TAinfantry/index.html. Using the Artillery pages, I am trying to do the same for the Artillery Volunteers.

I am a new Wikipedia contributor (did some anonymous typo editing earlier, but only today created an account) and I may be wrong, but I get the idea that you are a main contributor to these pages. When I am wrong, please direct me to the correct way or person to ask my questions.

On the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Cinque_Ports_Artillery_Volunteers I understand that after the first, rather complex, changes in 1860 and after additions until 1867, there were 1A, 1B, 1C, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 AVC. Nevertheless the article states that on consolidation the batteries are formed from 1 - 9 AVC. What (and in particular when) occurred this renumbering?

Second, the page says that there was: 2nd AVC raised at Ramsgate 2 January 1860; designated 1st C in August 1860. and also: 2nd AVC raised at Sandwich 13 February 1860; designated 4th in May 1860; re-designated 2nd in August 1860 This would mean that from 13 February until May there were 2 AVCs with the number 2nd. Is that true and was it an administrative error made in 1860?

Also, The 3rd was created at Walmer 6 February 1860. When I interprete correct, it must be the 5th in the consolidation list, but that is located at Deal. There is no mentioning of this move in the page.

BTW, in the mean time I found that information in http://web.archive.org/web/20071128003924/http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/volmil-england/varty/ke-cp.htm Likewise it says there: 1st C Cinque Port Artillery Volunteer Corps at Ramsgate, raised 2 Jan .1860 as 2nd Cinque Ports AVC [not listed until May 1860]; increased to two btys Apr(?). 1860; redesignated Aug. 1860 as 1st C Corps which explains why there were two 2nd AVCs at the same tine.

Pre Second World War British regiments - where were the 3rd and 4th Battalions

Going into World War II and in descriptions of what regiments did in the war, often either the 3rd or 4th Battalions seem to be missing (eg A&SH). I really have very little information on orders of battle post-1947, so this is one that I can't comment on with any confidence. It seems very detailed but with sketchy references. What I can confirm is that 56th (London) Division was broken up in March 1961 and its identity continued by 56th (London) Infantry Brigade (Maj D.K. Edwards, A History of the 1st Middlesex Volunteer Engineers (101 (London) Engineer Regiment, TA) 1860–1967, London, 1967, p. 195.)

This would be a very useful list if it stands up to scrutiny.

Hi, this is very out of the blue but I've seen you editing in related articles and I wondered whether you might have access to Order of Battle of Divisions Part 5B, by F. W. Perry? I can't find it anywhere, and am writing up a biography on the British Indian Army cavalry officer Henry John Milnes MacAndrew. Would very much like to include any information it has! Hi. Perry is very hard to find unless you have access to a specialist library like the Imperial War Museum, The National Archives (UK), or the Australian War Memorial. I only have a few snatched photocopies of pages I needed a few years ago. There's currently one copy on ebay, none on Abebooks or Amazon, and Ray Westlake's publishing business seems to have closed down. In any case, a quick check suggests that almost all the information in Perry is already transcribed into the orders of battle and lists of commanders in the brigade and divisional pages on Wikipedia. Not very helpful, I'm afraid, but the best that I can suggest. Rickfive (talk) 15:22, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

Agh, very frustrating! Annoyingly while the British Indian Army has some nice OOBs here, the individual unit pages and more specifically the lists of commanders are very bare. I don't know when exactly Macandrew took command of 2nd Indian Cavalry Division in 1916/17, or what the name of the brigade he commanded beforehand even was! Thanks nonetheless; I'll persevere!
